Though the more common black ants, or the ‘sugar ant’ as it is called, is not harmful, the fire ant’s bite can cause pain and swelling. Is there a home remedy for getting rid of ants? Well, there are quite a few home remedies. Let us take a look at them:

  • Boric acid is a very effective ant exterminator. Prepare a mixture of three cups of water, a cup of sugar and four teaspoons of boric acid. Pour this mixture into five or six bottles stuffed with cotton balls. Screw the lid tightly and punch in four to five hole. Keep near the ant mound or the source from where the ants seem to be coming. NOTE: Do not forget to stick a highly visible danger sign to the bottles.
  • Clog holes and crevices in walls and floors with talcum powder or baby powder.
  • A non-toxic home remedy for getting rid of ants is diatomaceous earth. Spread it on ant-infested areas. In time it kills the ants by drying out them out chaffing them.
  • Cucumber skin, bay leaves, cloves and ground cinnamon can also be used as ant repellents.

Any home remedy for getting rid of ants, which involves even mildly toxic substances like boric acid, should be handled with utmost care. All members of the family should be alerted before the poisonous substances are used and huge danger signs should be stuck onto bottles and sprays containing such substances.
